Eritrean Authorities Detain Jehovah's Witness for Conscientious Objection to Military Service

Eyasu Yohannes, a Jehovah's Witness, was reportedly apprehended in Eritrea in September 2023 by mobilization soldiers for refusing compulsory military service due to his religious beliefs. His ongoing detention highlights severe concerns regarding religious freedom and human rights in the nation.

Eritrean authorities are reportedly holding Eyasu Yohannes, a member of the Jehovah's Witness faith, in detention. His arrest and continued confinement raise significant concerns regarding the state of religious liberty and the right to conscientious objection within the country.

Reports indicate that Mr. Yohannes was apprehended by military mobilization personnel on a public street in September 2023. His arrest stems from his conscientious objection to mandatory military service, a position consistent with his faith as a Jehovah's Witness. He remains in custody, reportedly held because of his religious convictions and practices.

The detention of individuals for refusing military service based on deeply held religious beliefs constitutes a direct violation of international human rights standards, specifically the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. Such actions undermine the fundamental dignity of individuals and the principles of non-discrimination.

Montagnards Stand for Justice emphasizes the importance of upholding these universal rights for all people, regardless of their location or religious affiliation. We advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience, including Eyasu Yohannes, and call upon governments to respect the right to conscientious objection to military service.
